Wear A Jacket, Feel The Movies

hapticsjacket.jpg

Are movies going to become more interactive for viewers? If you're asking Philips Electronics, then the answer is yes. The company created a jacket that features a concept gamers are familiar with: force feedback. Wearing it lets you feel the action by activating during certain times in the movie. That activation causes actuators to vibrate or rumble in varying degrees.

For example, if the scene playing out happens to be an earthquake, the vibration will come in gradually, building up from a soothing massage to a violent tremor depending on how intense the action is on the screen. The jacket is also capable of focusing on certain parts of the body, so if an arm injury takes place in the film, then it only activates the corresponding arm on the jacket.

You'll probably notice that I haven't mentioned a name for the garment. That's because the haptic jacket was only demoed so it's not commercially available yet. There are currently no plans to make a matching pair of pants for it. And before you ask, no underwear was mentioned either.
