Portable Media Via The DS

Nintendo has dominated the handheld market ever since the first Game Boy arrived. It still continues to do so with the DS, albeit with some competition coming from the PSP. Heavily influenced by the PlayStation's design, the PSP is more than a gaming console. It's a media player, a picture viewer and a web browser all in one. Nintendo wants to even things out with the DSvision, which will turn the DS into a portable media player.

Dubbed the DSvision, it will be launched in Japan next spring and will require DS Lite owners to pick up a £17 bundle that features a USB dongle and a 512MB microSD memory card that fits inside the USB dongle's slot. It doesn't use the DS' wireless capability to download movies, but instead requires users to purchase these movies on the DSvision website, transfer it to the microSD memory card and plugged into the DS Lite itself.

Movies, TV shows, e-books and comics will all be viewable using the DSvision, expanding the capabilities of the device. Don't expect the image quality to great though. In fact, I'm already wondering how subtitles will work on this system.
