Microsoft Reveals TouchWall Computer

Microsoft is seriously investing in touchscreen technology these days. We've already seen the Surface. The Center for Information Work could've been another example, but it's been flying under the radar for quite a while now, so we'll have to check back on that later. The focus is on the TouchWall, which is aptly named: it's a wall that has a touchscreen interface, akin to a high-tech whiteboard.

The device to be shown Wednesday is something like a giant Surface unit turned on its side.

TouchWall is one of several multitouch prototypes Microsoft Research has created, in addition to the tabletop unit that Microsoft's Surface group has begun to sell commercially. Among the other devices the company is also reportedly working on is a sphere-shaped device.

It will be interesting to see which one of these devices will become successful. While I admire Microsoft for making serious investments in the technology, I also have this nagging feeling that it's making sure that all bases are covered. After all, it's making touchscreen tables, touchscreen walls and touchscreen desks. What's next, touchscreen mattresses?
