Google Launches New Music Service In China

Whether it's just in time for the Olympics or not, Google has launched a music service in China that will allow downloads of licensed songs. It's free for the users, but the search giant seeks to earn from the advertising that the new service will generate.

Google said on Wednesday its service would initially let Internet users search tens of thousands of Chinese songs by singer or song title on its website and download them from Top100.cn, a Chinese music website co-founded by basketball star Yao Ming.

Advertising revenue from the service will be shared among Top100.cn and its music partners.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out for Google. Anytime you mention Internet and music in one sentence, piracy immediately comes to mind. Will this be another case of a good idea gone horribly wrong, or will the players involved actually earn something from this venture? Stay tuned.
