DARPA Wants Its Airplane To Fly & Swim

Once again, today's post is something you've only seen in the movies. The engineers at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) want to make a submersible airplane. Yes, you read that right. The folks over there want to sink a plane in water and have it run like a submarine, but not quite. I know, it's confusing, but read on.

The agency's Submersible Aircraft research project is exploring the possibility of making an aircraft that can maneuver underwater...

DARPA said that the concept being evaluated here is for a submersible aircraft, not a flying submarine.

Hit the source for the full details. The criteria is there, along with other information. The obstacles to overcome are enormous, but the basics start with a physics problem. What kind of objects fly? Light ones. What kind of objects sink? Heavy ones. Can the engineers combine both properties? We'll find out.

And no, it's not April 1. I already checked the date.
